In almost every household fridge, one evaporator in the freezer produces all the cold air, and a small fan pushes a share of it through a channel into the fresh food section. When the fridge goes warm while the freezer stays cold, the cold isn’t being made wrong — it’s not being delivered. That narrows the diagnosis to four things. 1. The evaporator fan motor has quit
This is the delivery truck itself. The evaporator fan sits behind the back panel of the freezer and blows air across the coils and into the fridge compartment. When it fails, the freezer stays cold by proximity — it’s sitting right next to the evaporator — but the fridge gets nothing.
Tell-tale signs: The fridge is warm, the freezer is fine, and it’s unusually quiet inside — no faint fan whir when the doors are closed. Sometimes the opposite: a loud squeal or chirp from the freezer for a few weeks before it dies, which is the motor bearing wearing out. Some models cut the fan when a door opens, so press the door switch in and listen.
2. Frost has buried the evaporator coils (defrost system failure)
Every frost-free fridge runs a defrost cycle a few times a day — a small heater melts the frost off the coils before it accumulates. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or control board fails, frost builds until the coils become a solid block of ice. Air can’t pass through ice. The fan may be running perfectly and moving almost no air.
Tell-tale signs: The problem crept in over one to two weeks rather than overnight. There may be frost on the freezer’s back interior panel, or the panel sweats. Unplugging the fridge for 24 hours with the doors open “fixes” it — temporarily. That melt-out trick confirms the diagnosis, but the frost will be back in a week or two unless the failed defrost component is replaced.
3. The air damper is stuck closed
The damper is a motorized flap between the freezer and fridge sections that opens and closes to regulate how much cold air the fresh food side receives. When it sticks closed — jammed by ice, or the little motor fails — the supply line is shut off entirely.
Tell-tale signs: Everything sounds normal. Fan running, compressor running, freezer perfect — and the fridge slowly climbing toward room temperature. On many models you can hear the damper click or hum as it tries to move. This one is nearly impossible to confirm without opening up the air tower, which is why it’s the cause most often misdiagnosed as “needs a new compressor” by guesswork.
4. A failed thermistor is lying to the control board
The thermistor is the temperature sensor in the fresh food section. The control board decides how much cold air to send based on what the thermistor reports. When it drifts or fails, the board believes the fridge is already cold and throttles the fan or closes the damper — the hardware is fine, the information is wrong.
Tell-tale signs: Erratic behaviour rather than a steady decline. The fridge swings warm, recovers, goes warm again. Milk spoils on one shelf while lettuce freezes in the crisper. A technician confirms this in minutes with a resistance reading; there’s no reliable way to eyeball it.
Two things to check before calling anyone
Neither of these is one of the four causes, but both mimic them and cost nothing to rule out:
Blocked vents. The cold air enters the fridge through vents on the back wall. A tall cake box or an overpacked top shelf pressed against them chokes the airflow. Pull items a few centimetres off the back wall and give it 12 hours.
Dirty condenser coils. If the coils under or behind the fridge are matted with pet hair and dust, the whole system loses capacity — and the fresh food section, being last in line for cold air, suffers first. Vacuum them and give it a day.
If the fridge is still warm after that, it’s one of the four above — and all four are internal repairs involving live components and control boards, not weekend DIY.
