Here’s a pattern we hear on the phone every January: “It dried fine all summer, and now towels take two cycles.” People assume the machine is aging. But an element doesn’t get weaker in cold weather — it either heats or it doesn’t. A dryer that slows down seasonally is almost always pointing outside itself, at the vent run.
Why winter chokes a dryer vent
A dryer doesn’t remove water with heat alone — it removes it with airflow. Warm, wet air has to leave the house through the vent, and in a Southwestern Ontario winter that exhaust hits an outside flap sitting at −15°C. The moisture in it condenses, then freezes. Lint that would have blown clear in July now sticks to damp, icy duct walls. Some outdoor flaps literally freeze shut, or get blocked by drifted snow, and the dryer spends the whole cycle re-breathing its own humidity.
The one check that settles it: run the dryer and go look at the outside vent. You should feel a strong, steady push of warm air and see the flap held fully open. A weak breath, a flap that barely lifts, or frost built up around the hood means the run is restricted — and no part inside the machine will fix that.

Lint is remarkably flammable, and a restricted vent parks hot, lint-loaded air inside the cabinet. It’s also self-accelerating: restricted airflow overheats the duct, which bakes lint into place, which restricts it further. This is why dryer fires cluster in winter. Before it ever gets that far, most dryers protect themselves — a one-shot thermal fuse blows, and suddenly the dryer tumbles with no heat at all. That fuse failing is rarely bad luck. It’s nearly always the vent’s confession.
When it really is the machine
If the vent flows freely and clothes still come out damp, the shortlist inside is short: a heating element burned partway through (heats, but weakly), a cycling thermostat cutting heat too early, or a moisture sensor coated in dryer-sheet residue telling the machine the load is already dry. Wipe the two metal sensor bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol — that one’s free.
