Timer runs, food stays cold
Magnetron, diode or capacitor failure in the high-voltage section. Definitively a professional repair — that capacitor stores a dangerous charge even unplugged.
Totally dead

Sparks or arcing inside the cavity
A carbonized waveguide cover, chipped cavity paint or metal contact. Stop using it; arcing escalates and it’s an easy early fix.
Keypad ignoring your fingers
Worn membrane or a board fault. On a built-in, a new panel costs a fraction of replacing and re-trimming the whole unit.
OTR vent fan weak or silent
The hood-fan motor or damper in the vent section has failed — separate from the microwave circuitry and just as fixable.
Door won’t latch or springs back open
Worn latch hooks or a misaligned interlock assembly. It also explains many ‘dead’ microwaves, since the interlocks cut all power.
